My Teaching Philosophy
Teaching is a way that I can better the well-being of youth and their future. While thinking about teaching, I think about how students learn through different avenues and how they are academically or developmentally at a different point compared to their peers. This is when I think of ways to differentiate in my classroom; which has proven to be effective in all my experience as a teacher and as a student. I believe that for striving students, small groups, with several checkpoints and more scaffolding are reliable ways to help them in learning. For more advanced students compacting, or providing more challenging projects that meet the same standards as the regular class work, would be ideal. For occasions when this is not appropriate, small groups will help the advanced learners when they are helping a struggling student; when you can teach a concept to others you also further learn the concept yourself. Interacting with parents or guardians would assist me in developing ways to differentiate. Guardians should know if their students are struggling and succeeding. Having these relationships with guardians is important and can help reduce dropout rates by getting the guardians involved and keeping them informed about their students and the content they are learning. I will encourage guardian involvement with newsletters home, emails or phone calls, and by using parents as guest speakers or volunteers in the class when it is possible and is relatable to projects or content in the class. I strive to improve the well-being of students which is why I chose family and consumer sciences as my content. As a career technical educator, I will teach students life skills that they will use on a day-to-day basis like relationship skills, nutrition knowledge, and financial literacy. They will also develop many 21st century skills that will help them in the job market or while applying for college, as these are skills employers typically look for in employees. I will teach these skills through curricula appropriate for my students and by using what they already know. To use what they already know I will apply academic integration in all of my classes. Students will become critical thinkers while making connections from all their core classes to family and consumer sciences classes. Because of these connections students will be able to be assessed by a proficiency scale on the content, objectives and standards that are discussed in the lessons. This proficiency scale will come to students in forms of projects with clear rubrics, examinations with various types of questions, self or peer evaluation and basic check in points. This scale will be aligned with each individual lesson and with the traditional grading system. This scale will help students with understanding the goals of the lessons. Overall, as a teacher I will instill responsibility into the students for their own learning. I am here to teach and guide them; this is true, but they also have a job of learning, participating and inquiring. Teaching them family and consumer sciences in various forms, along with life skills and 21st century skills, is my main priority because I truly believe it will benefit their well-being, even that of their families. This in turn will benefit the well-being of the future.
